Market & Local Food Tour

Today’s all about eating well and seeing the real Tirana

We’ll embark on a local food tour with a stop at a tiny local spot where you’ll try the incredible byrek—flaky pastry filled with cheese, spinach, or meat. Then we’ll make our way to Çam Bazaar, where you can find everything from clothes to kitchen tools, all tied to the stories of the Çam community. Your guide will take you down backstreets and through bustling produce markets that most tourists never find—this is Tirana the way locals live it.

We’ll wander through quirky neighborhoods full of personality—colorful buildings, street art, daily routines unfolding all around us. You’ll dig through treasures at the Bicycle Bazaar (think secondhand everything), then head to the New Bazaar for a traditional lunch: juicy qofte meatballs, char-grilled veggies, fresh bread, and fergese, this creamy roasted pepper and cheese dish that’s pure comfort food.

And of course, no proper Albanian meal ends without a glass of raki—the beloved local spirit said to cure just about anything. As we say here, “Raki nuk ka shok!” (Raki has no equal).

DAY 3

DAY 3 image

Berat

1:45 DRIVE

Today we head to one of the most picturesque places in Albania—Berat, a UNESCO World Heritage site that feels like stepping into a storybook. Known as the “town of 1001 windows,” this place is full of charm and character, with stone streets that wind past old white houses stacked on the hillsides like they’re balancing on each other. It’s got serious history too—starting out as an Illyrian settlement way back in the 5th century BC, and later becoming a castle city called Antipatrea. And get this: people still live inside the ancient castle walls!

You’ll explore Berat’s mix of old churches, mosques, and Ottoman-era homes, all tucked between the castle hill and the river. We’ll walk across a centuries-old stone bridge, learn about Albania’s communist past, and visit museums that bring it all to life. The city is also the birthplace of Onufri, a legendary church painter whose one-of-a-kind red pigment still stumps artists today.

We’ll wrap the day by exploring the peaceful Gorica neighborhood, and soak in one last look at the windows glowing in the afternoon light. Your evening is free to explore or relax.

DAY 4

DAY 4 image

Berat, Mrizi i Zanava, Shkodra

2:45 DRIVE

This morning we head into the Albanian countryside for something truly special—a visit to one of the most inspiring slow food farms in the Balkans.

Mrizi i Zanave isn’t just a place to eat—it’s a whole philosophy. We’ll tour the farm, learn how this family-run spot grew from humble beginnings into a thriving business that now supports over 400 people in nearby villages. You’ll get to see how they’ve repurposed old communist-era buildings into storerooms filled with fresh, local, organic products, all made with deep respect for tradition and the land. And yes, there’ll be free time to enjoy a delicious, home-cooked lunch straight from the farm—or grab a few tasty souvenirs to take with you.

Later in the afternoon, we’ll make our way north to Shkodra—one of Albania’s oldest and most storied cities, perched near the country’s largest lake. History runs deep here. We’ll explore Rozafa Castle, where you’ll hear ancient legends and take in sweeping views of three rivers as they flow into the Adriatic Sea. The town itself is full of charm, with Venetian-style architecture and a rich blend of cultures that have passed through over the centuries.

DAY 5

DAY 5 image

Shkodra, Sveti Stefan, Budva (Montenegro)

2:00 DRIVE

Today we cross into a brand new country—Montenegro! After breakfast, we’ll say farewell to Shkodra and hit the road, heading toward the gorgeous Adriatic coastline.

Along the way, we’ll stop to take in one of Montenegro’s most photographed views: the legendary island of Sveti Stefan. Once a quiet fishing village, this tiny islet is now home to a world-famous private resort. While we can’t walk onto the island itself, the panoramic views from the coastline are absolutely stunning. It’s the kind of place where you’ll want to pause, breathe it in, and let the moment sink into memory.

From there, we continue on to Budva, one of Montenegro’s most iconic seaside towns. It’s got everything—sun-soaked beaches, a sparkling blue sea, and a rich history that stretches back over 2,500 years. We’ll start by exploring the Old Town, a walled medieval quarter filled with narrow cobbled streets, ancient churches, and sea-facing fortresses. Highlights include the Church of St. Ivan, once the seat of the bishopric, and the quaint Church of St. Mary, tucked away like a little secret waiting to be found. You’ll feel like you’re walking through a living museum—except with salty sea air and the buzz of life all around you.

Afterward, you’ll have time to wander or relax at your own pace. Whether you’re drawn to the bustling promenade of modern Budva with its cafés and shops, or you prefer lingering in the quiet corners of the Old Town, there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy this charming coastal city.

DAY 6

DAY 6 image

Budva, Kotor, Durmitor National Park

3:00 DRIVE

We leave the coast behind today and make our way into the heart of Montenegro, starting with a stop in Kotor, a UNESCO World Heritage site that feels like it’s straight out of a medieval fantasy.

The Old Town is a labyrinth of narrow stone alleys and hidden corners—intentionally designed to confuse invaders, though now it’s just fun to explore. You’ll see centuries-old buildings, charming little squares, and churches that have stood the test of time. One of our favorite stops is St. Luke’s Church, beloved by locals for its symbolism of unity and peace. Keep an eye out for the plaques marking the dates and stories behind the town’s oldest homes—they give you a glimpse into just how deep this town’s roots go.

After Kotor, get ready for a dramatic change of scenery as we wind our way into Durmitor National Park, one of the wildest, most breathtaking parts of the Balkans. The drive itself is a treat—rolling through peaceful villages and climbing into Montenegro’s rugged mountain interior. By the time we arrive in Durmitor, you’ll be surrounded by towering peaks, dense pine forests, glacial lakes, and wide-open skies. This UNESCO-listed park spans over 39,000 hectares of raw natural beauty, and it’s a dream for anyone who loves being outdoors.

You’ll settle into a cozy spot near the park and have the evening to relax—maybe take a short walk, breathe in that fresh mountain air, or enjoy a hearty local dinner as the sun sets behind the dramatic silhouettes of the mountains. This is the kind of place that makes you feel small in the best possible way.

You’ll wander along mountain trails that lead past pine forests, dramatic cliffs, and shimmering glacial lakes—including the jaw-dropping Black Lake (Crno Jezero)

After a morning immersed in the wild beauty of Montenegro, we’ll hop back in the van for a scenic cross-border drive into Bosnia and Herzegovina. The journey winds through forested hills and rolling valleys, passing rivers and remote villages that feel almost untouched by time.

By late afternoon, we’ll arrive in Sarajevo, a city with a story like no other—layered, resilient, and ready to welcome you with open arms. Tonight, you’ll settle into your accommodation and start to feel the shift from nature to culture as we prepare to explore this unforgettable city tomorrow.

DAY 8

DAY 8 image

Sarajevo City Tour

Today we dive into the soul of Sarajevo, a city shaped by centuries of history, resilience, and cultural fusion. As we explore on foot, you’ll notice that the past is still etched into the walls—bullet holes and shrapnel marks serve as quiet but powerful reminders of the war that shook this city not so long ago.

Our local guide will walk us through Sarajevo’s rich and complex story, from its medieval Bosnian Kingdom roots to the days of Ottoman rule and the Austro-Hungarian empire. We’ll wander through markets and old bazaars, pass by mosques, synagogues, and churches all nestled side by side—and start to understand why Sarajevo is known as the “Jerusalem of Europe.”

One of the most fascinating stops is the Latin Bridge, where a single moment changed the course of world history. You’ll hear how the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand right here ignited World War I, and how the city has been shaped ever since.

But it’s not all heavy history—Sarajevo is also full of warmth, community, and truly amazing food! We’ll make time to sample some of the city’s best-loved traditional dishes (think grilled meats, flaky pastries, and sweet desserts that’ll have you asking for seconds). You’ll leave today with a deeper appreciation for this extraordinary city and its people—tough, proud, and full of heart.

DAY 9

DAY 9 image

Sarajevo & Mostar

2:00 DRIVE

Today we journey to Mostar, a city where history and culture meet in the most unforgettable way. Our first stop is the legendary Old Bridge (Stari Most)—a stunning 16th-century masterpiece of Islamic architecture and a symbol of resilience, rebuilt after the conflict that once tore the region apart. Standing on the bridge, you’ll feel the weight of history and the hope of reconciliation beneath your feet.

From there, we’ll wander through the Old Bazaar, where colorful streets buzz with life and stories. As you explore, you’ll notice the “Don’t Forget” plaques scattered throughout the city—reminders to honor the past while moving forward. Mostar is a fascinating blend of old and new, with charming mosques, bustling Turkish bazaars, and twisting cobbled alleyways waiting to be discovered.

In the afternoon, the city is yours to roam at your own pace—soak up the atmosphere, find a cozy café, or simply lose yourself in the magic of this UNESCO World Heritage site.

DAY 10 image

Mostar, Blagaj Tekke, Medjugorje

Today, we’ll escape the bustle of the city and step into some of Herzegovina’s most serene and captivating spots. Our first stop is Blagaj Tekke, an enchanting Ottoman-era monastery that seems to emerge right from the cliffside, with the crystal-clear turquoise waters of the Buna River gently flowing at its feet. This place feels like stepping into a painting—where ancient stone meets pristine nature—and it’s perfect for soaking up a sense of calm and history all at once.

From there, we journey to Medjugorje, a small village known worldwide as a place of spiritual pilgrimage. Since 1981, visitors have come here drawn by reports of apparitions of the Virgin Mary, and the atmosphere is one of quiet reverence mixed with heartfelt hope. You can explore the village, visit the beautifully simple Church of St. James, or if you’re up for it, hike the gentle trails up Apparition Hill for a moment of reflection and amazing views.

To finish the day on a delicious note, we’ll visit a charming winery nestled in the heart of the Herzegovinian countryside. Here, you’ll enjoy a guided wine tasting featuring a handpicked selection of local wines—rich, earthy, and full of character—paired with traditional bites and appetizers* that highlight the region’s unique flavors. Our host will share stories about the winemaking process and the passion behind each bottle.
